What Breed?
Our Boxer Line Our Bulldog Line
Is a boxer the breed for you?
Not everyone should own a dog … in fact there are a lot of people who should invest in a stuffed animal instead of a breathing, loving devoted companion. I myself love all animals, and dogs especially. I own quite a few, from mutts to pure breeds. I specialize in the smushy faces that to me are so adorable and devoted. Like all animals, they will become a product of their environment, however genetics play a role also.
Check Multiple Breeders
I highly recommend that you look around at multiple breeders and find out if their dogs have any health or temperament problems. We all know that boxers (like several other breeds) are prone to cancer, skin allergies, breathing problems, heat stroke, and, of course, heart problems. Ask about the oldest dog at the kennel you are considering — is it the same bloodline as your pup? Can they give you references of other puppy owners? Will they allow you to call their vet for information?
Take Your Time to Pick the Dog for You
You should never feel hurried or pressured into buying a dog. Be aware of what you are purchasing — a pal for life! Maybe not your life, but definitely their life. I really believe that you should be able to interact with the parents of your pup and other dogs in the kennel. If not, why? Looks are great and very important especially if you’re showing your dog. However, for a pet you may consider a dog with less than perfect markings but with good health and, more importantly, great temperament! It is a wise investment to get health insurance on any breed of puppy.
My boxers are party animals or couch potatoes, depending on what’s going on. If I want to work, run, bike, or just lay around, that’s exactly what they want — to be with me regardless of what I'm doing.
Training is Essential
Boxers are great dogs; however, they are very powerful and not for the non-disciplinarians of the world. Give them an inch and they'll take a mile.
Training is a must with all my pups and when a pup is purchased here the buyer agrees to mandatory visits and training. All pups are crate trained and potty started and all know basic obedience. The pups don't leave until they are approximately 10 weeks old. They have had their shots and are checked by the vet regularly for the first 10 weeks.
All pups automatically go into our puppy classes, so I can see and help new owners with problems or any issues. All owners learn about the dangers of owning a dog, as well as basic first aid, nutritional information and much more. These are my “kids” that people adopt and I want knowledgeable owners for them.
Boxers can be fun, dedicated, loving guardians, great with people and children, athletic, smart, magnificent creatures … ONLY when you train them to be this way.
Boxers can be destructive, jumping fools, hazards to older people and children because of hyperactivity, unable to run in summer or liable to freeze in winter, if not trained and cared for properly. TRAINING is an essential aspect of care for all companion animals, especially a friendly boxer or even a nasty one. If you can't control and have respect from your boxer, you will be in great danger of an accident. I have people come to me all the time and say, “Wow, yeah, we want one just like that.” Well then, you must train it. Boxers are so willing to work and to please, they'll do anything for you if treated right.
Do Your Homework
Always remember the boxer is like all purebreds, a dog that has potential medical problems. Please do your homework before getting a dog you may not be prepared for. The worst thing is to give up on the dog. Imagine how you'd feel if we gave up on you when you were sick, silly or out of control.
Good luck with your search. REMEMBER, puppies are all cute and dear to us but check out multiple breeders and make sure you ASK questions.
